Advocacy

BPSOS has engaged in advocacy efforts at all levels: local, national, and international. 

Highlights of Advocacy Success:

  • Successfully advocated for the Resettlement Opportunities for Vietnamese Returnees (ROVR) Program;
  • Reopened the Humanitarian Resettlement (HR) program;
  • Extended the McCain Amendment Program, which provides that certain sons or daughters of former Vietnamese re-education center detainees are to be considered refugees of special humanitarian concern and may be eligible for resettlement in the U.S. if they meet qualifications criteria;
  • Successfully advocated for the establishment of the Priority One refugee program;
  • Successfully advocated for unified community response and effective government actions at local and federal levels to end the long-standing racial violence against Asian immigrant students in South Philadelphia School District in 2010;
  • Advocatated for passage or adoption of many new laws addressing critical issues in the following areas:
    • International religious freedom
    • Trafficking victims protection
    • Human rights in Vietnam
    • Citizenship for Amerasians
