Christine Nguyen, Equal Justice Works Fellow, establishes the Asian Immigrant Youth Assistance Project at BPSOS

Christine Nguyen will be establishing the Asian Immigrant Youth Assistance Project (AIYA) at BPSOS. This project will provide direct immigration legal services and resources to Asian immigrant children and families in the D.C. metro area through community outreach and education. She will be working with youth who are victims of trafficking; victims of crime; have been persecuted in their home countries; and who are abandoned, abused, and neglected. In addition, she will be working to ensure access to resources in schools for limited English proficient youth and families through community workshops and know your rights presentations. 

Ms. Nguyen grew up in Calgary, Alberta Canada. As a young adult, she worked as a youth mentor for St. Vincent Liem Vietnamese Catholic Church in Calgary for over 6 years. The mentorship program focused on inspiring young children to become leaders through after school educational programs. In 2004, she became involved in her parent's humanitarian efforts at various orphanages in Vietnam. This stirred her passion for community involvement on both the local and global scale. She helped her parents offer medical assistance and raise money for children in Camau, Vietnam. 

Ms. Nguyen graduated from Thomas M. Cooley Law School. During law school, Ms. Nguyen was a student attorney at St. Vincent Catholic Charities Immigration Law Clinic where she assisted asylees, refugees, and parolees attain legal status, lawful permanent residency, and citizenship. She also clerked at the Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center (APALRC), where she helped to provide legal services to survivors of domestic violence in the D.C. metro area. She was the recipient of the Inaugural Asian Pacific American Bar Association Educational Fund (AEF) Bar Assistance grant in 2009. 

In 2009, Ms. Nguyen was competitively selected as an Equal Justice Works Fellow by Steptoe and Johnson, LLP to implement the Asian Immigrant Youth Assistance Project in the D.C. metro area. In 2009-2010, she was a Staff Attorney and Equal Justice Works Fellow at the APALRC. She worked on providing immigration relief for youth, conducted know your rights workshops, assisted with community outreach and education, and established strong relationships with community partners and school counselors. At BPSOS, she will continue to provide safety, security, and permanency for Asian youth and families. 

Ms. Nguyen graduated from the University of Calgary in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. She earned her Juris Doctor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Ms. Nguyen is admitted in Maryland. She speaks Vietnamese and is passionate about community building, music, and dance.
