Executive Director (Houston, TX)

 

Position Summary: The Executive Director will lead BPSOS-Houston in its transition from being a local branch of a national organization to an independently incorporated 501(c)(3) with a local Board of Directors and a new chapter affiliation designation with the national organization. The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall management of the new organization, including direct responsibility for such key BPSOS-Houston functions as strategic planning, fund development, communications/public relations and assuming a leadership role in promoting the organization’s mission, core values and culture.  In addition, the Director will be responsible for providing oversight of BPSOS-Houston’s stewardship efforts, including successfully fulfilling duties of grant and contract compliance, as well as maintaining relationships with government, foundation, and corporate funders.  The ideal candidate will work with BPSOS-Houston colleagues, BPSOS-Houston’s Board of Directors, the national BPSOS development team, and local program partners and community organizations to maintain and grow resources necessary to successfully fulfill the organization’s mission.

 

Reports to: Board of Directors.

 

R E S P O N S I B I L I T I E S

 

Strategic Planning and Execution

1.      Works with BPSOS-Houston’s Leadership Team and Board of Directors, as well as National Support Staff, to develop and implement a three-year strategic plan and annual operating plans.

2.      Takes a leadership role in driving a collaborative process with the Board of Directors, staff and members that would result in the development of goals, objectives and operational plans for the organization.

3.      Cultivates a strong partnership with the Board of Directors in setting policies consistent with the mission of BPSOS-Houston. Works, as needed, with all standing and ad hoc committees of the Board.

4.      Positions the organization to be strong in the future through strategic planning.

 

Organizational Management

1.      Promotes organization’s culture, team spirit and team work among staff, volunteers, and Board members.

2.      Leads, motivates and develops staff and Board so that they are passionate about what BPSOS-Houston has achieved and are committed to working effectively toward continual improvement.

3.      Ensures the organization has staff with diverse skills appropriate to the needs of the position through people management activities including hiring, separation of employment, ongoing staff development, performance management, compensation and benefits.

4.      Ascertains that employment policies are adhered to in all employment practices and partners with the Board to implement changes.

5.      Oversees preparation of the annual budget and other necessary financial documents, and ensures proper finance and accounting procedures and practices. Provides information and justifications for Board of Directors in its budgetary review and approval process.

6.      Ensures that organization has the appropriate systems, physical space, and technology to operate efficiently and effectively.

 

Fund Development

1.      Ensures the organization’s financial sustainability through diversification of revenue streams, including grants, contracts, donations, and earned incomes. 

2.      Manages all fund development activities, including grant writing, partnership forming, cultivation and stewardship of donors, event planning, and identifying new resources. Actively seeks and maintains a diverse donor base of individual, business, foundation and government segments.

3.      Builds long term relationships with key donor segments based on mission, cultivation and stewardship, program outcomes and sound fiscal management.

4.      Leads organization's financial growth in order to maintain healthy cash flow, provide full services to our constituents and maintain adequate reserves.

 

Public Relations/Advocacy

1.      Promotes BPSOS-Houston’s visibility and welfare through participation and membership in community forums, civic organizations and activities that are aligned with BPSOS-Houston’s mission and vision.

2.      Leverages national BPSOS’ community leadership building initiatives to integrate BPSOS-Houston further in the local community.

3.      Advocates at the local, state and federal levels for the health, education and public policy issues that impact people within the Vietnamese community.

4.      Develops a strategic marketing plan that provides a clear and concise message telling the organization's story and goals for the community. Oversees the execution of marketing and media relations.

5.      Represents BPSOS-Houston in all media relations by participating in interviews and developing press releases and all other media type engagements.

 

Program Development and Implementation

1.      Ensures that programs meet the real needs of the local community.

2.      Oversees and supports the development, design and delivery of program initiatives, assuring that their goals and objectives are aligned with BPSOS-Houston’s overall strategic plan.

3.      Oversees and supports the administrative components of all program services, including contract negotiations, contract and grant reporting and contracted work.

4.      Provides for quality assurance monitoring of all BPSOS programs, assuring correction of any deficiencies in program services.

5.      Ensures resources are used to meet the mission as promised and in compliance with the law.  

Q U A L I FI C A T I O N S

1.      A minimum of 5 years nonprofit work experience in comparable fields or a combined 5 years of nonprofit and comparable experience (business, government, etc.), with at least 2 years in nonprofit sector.

2.      At least 3 years of demonstrated success in staff leadership, fundraising, partnership development and financial management.

3.      Worked in Houston for at least 3 of the past 5 years.

4.      Demonstrated success of effectively leading change and organizational growth through strategic planning.

5.      Demonstrated knowledge of health, education, legal and public policy issues that are faced by people within the immigrant, refugee, and Limited English Proficiency communities.

6.      Demonstrated success in acquiring agency support through successful grant applications and general fundraising.

7.      Strong fund development, marketing and public relations experience to successfully engage stakeholders, including funders, business partners, policy makers, media and communities.

8.      Strong and effective oral and written communication skills.

9.      Personal qualities that include integrity, commitment to BPSOS's mission, respect for diversity and the ability to inspire and motivate others.

10.  Required proficiency in Microsoft Office, i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.

11.  Bicultural (Vietnamese and American) competencies.

12.  Preferred fluency in Vietnamese.

 

Salary: Negotiable, depending on experience and qualifications.
